Starting something new can be terrifying and exciting at the same time. Terrifying because of the unknown which also makes it exciting.
If you want to begin your running journey the most important step, I tell runners is to BUILD YOU BASE first. What I mean by this, is simply just building up your cardiovascular fitness. All this involves just easy running for a period, nothing fancy. This easy running can be combined with periods of walking as well. What we want to achieve is to "build time on legs." This gets your body use to the movement of running. Don't worry about running a set distance, you just want to focus on building up that cardiovascular fitness which is the building block of your running journey. This is the foundation. Then in the coming months, you can build on that and start to incorporate speed work, tempo runs and more variety into your program.
Depending on your current fitness level will also impact how long you may do your base training for. You can do base training for up to 6 weeks, even longer, there are no rules to this. Work out how many times a week you want to run, this may be once a week, it may be 4 times a week, whatever you can do, and just do some easy running for 20 - 30 minutes. You then may want to increase that time. Remember to increase gradually, not suddenly as this can lead to burnout and injury.
Remember, build that base fitness first. This is the most importance building block of your running journey.
